MUSIC NOTES: 4.29.14

THIS SUNDAY, 5/4

Preacher: Dr. Jerry Joplin; Sermon topic: Heaven
Choir: “Hallelujah Medley” from “It Would Take a Cross”

THIS SUNDAY, 5/4; 5pm; BIBLE LEARNING SERIES: “When the Mormons Come Knocking”

BHBC Worship Center; teacher, Nick Watts; One session only.

What this class will NOT be:
(1) A time to bash or insult people of the Mormon faith. They are some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet.
(2) An opportunity to learn all we can about the Mormon faith. Not being a Mormon, I am neither qualified nor equipped to fulfill that objective. If you want to know more about the Mormon faith, flag down a Mormon Missionary like I did. 🙂

What this class WILL be:
(1) A lesson in biblical truth where conflicting “faith/belief systems” are concerned.
(2) An opportunity to identify the THREE KEY DIFFERENCES between biblical Christianity and every other “faith/belief system”.
(3) An opportunity to learn what to say to a Mormon Missionary who knocks on your door, or a Mormon friend when/if you should engage in faith-related dialogue.
(4) An opportunity to learn how to most effectively share your faith with a Mormon.

“IT WOULD TAKE A CROSS” – MAY 11th

PLEASE – even if you’ve missed rehearsals – come join me in this musical/artistic mission. We filled the loft last May for “The Story”, as well as for our Christmas Musical last December. I need someone in every seat.

The Truth That Gives Power to the Musical: I can’t overstate the power of the message of the cross. I’ll leave the communication of the cross’ power to Paul, who wrote, “When you were dead in your sins…, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us ALL our sins, having CANCELED the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the CROSS. And having disarmed the [satanic] powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the CROSS.” (Colossians 2:13-15)

Remaining Rehearsals: (1) Wed., 4/30, (2) Sun., 5/4, 3-5pm, (3) Wed., 5/7, (4) Sat., 5/10, 10:30-Noon.

Performances: 5/11 – 9:15am and 10:45am

“NAZARETH” – JESUS’ “SILENT YEARS” COMING TO TV

I see nothing but controversy coming from this future tv series.  I think there’s a reason God decided not to record details regarding Jesus’ adolescent and young adult years.  But, there’s money to be made from advertisers.  So, here come the shows…

VOCAL BEAUTY. FROM ICELAND.

Some folks in Iceland gathered together one day to create musical magic. I’m not certain what building they’re inside, but this I know: it has gorgeous acoustics. The song is medieval/renaissance in style. I absolutely loved singing this style of music in choir while at HSU. Sit back and enjoy.

YOU’RE A STAR! THE MOVIE IS “FACEBOOK”. YOUR ROLE IS THE LOSER.

This is a blog every parent in America should read. But, it’s a solid resource for us all – since social media plays a role in the majority of Americans nowadays.

HEAVEN IS 4 REAL

Wonderful blog (in my opinion) of the book-turned-into-movie. I have read the book (loved it.) Have not seen the movie yet but look forward to doing so. I haven’t heard any of the debate to which the blogger refers, but I strongly agree with (1) the blogger’s argument that experiences like this are real, and (2) that every – EVERY – “near death” experience should be tested against the Bible.

Great quote from editorial: [On 4-year-old Colton’s near-death experience]: Colton’s grandmother reflects this attitude: “I accepted the idea of heaven before, but now I visualize it. Before, I’d heard, but now I know that someday I’m going to see.”

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER: May 1st, in front of the Lubbock County Courthouse downtown. We meet on the lawn next to the gazebo structure there. It is a marvelous time for the whole community to representatively lift up our nation, state, and community, and those who serve us in public office. It is also an opportunity for pastors to gather around our civic officials and pray for them in person.

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

This week’s entry comes courtesy of one of my favorite comedians, Brian Regan. If you’ve ever flown before you’ll be laughing loudly – just like I was.

IT WOULD TAKE A CROSS – MAY 11th

Well, after you blew me away this past Sunday morning (I lost count of how many people told me how powerful the choir was), I can NOT wait for May 11th!

Remaining Rehearsals: (1) Wed., 4/23, (2) Wed., 4/30, (3) Sun., 5/4, 3-5pm, (4) Wed., 5/7, (5) Sat., 5/10, 10:30-Noon.

Performances: 5/11 – 9:15am and 10:45am

BIBLE LEARNING SERIES: “When the Mormons Come Knocking”

May 4th; 5pm; BHBC Worship Center; teacher, Nick Watts; One session only.

We’ll learn THREE KEY QUESTIONS to ask when engaging in conversation with people representing any “faith-belief system” other than biblical Christianity.

EASTER HALLELUJAH

Leonard Cohen’s 30 year old, hauntingly beautiful “Hallelujah” continues to make a comeback as various artists are given legal permission to re-record it with new lyrics. This brand new Easter version is absolutely gorgeous.

SAEED ABEDINI

I like to keep you updated on Pastor Abedini (imprisoned in Iran solely due to his faith in Jesus). In case you missed it, here is a letter written by Abedini to encourage believers during this Easter season.

COLBERT VS. EHRMAN

I rarely watch Stephen Colbert (heir to David Letterman’s “Late Show” show on CBS.) I have read Dr. Bart Erhman’s book, “Who Is Jesus?” Colbert is Catholic. Ehrman is, in his own words, “agnostic with atheistic leanings.” Colbert is a talk show host/comedian. Ehrman is a Ph.D. professor of New Testament at the University of NC. Watch as Colbert, in comedic form no less, reduces Ehrman to looking like an imbicile.

6 THINGS THE CHURCH CAN LEARN FROM JIMMY FALLON

Most of these types of articles are a complete waste of editorial space. However, I really liked this one. Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno as the host of NBC’s “Late Nite.”

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

This week’s entry comes from a tweet (a post on the social media site, Twitter) I saw this past week.

(In light of Easter, the person posted the following:) “The most hilarious line in the Bible is Matthew 27:65. In regard to guarding Jesus’ tomb, Pilate gave these instructions: ‘Go, make it as secure as you can.’ Uh…Good luck w/that.”

GRACE NOTES: “How to Handle a Critic” – We’ve all got’em. Here’s some practical, biblical wisdom for how to respond (if at all.)

REASONABLE FAITH – THE CASE FOR THE RESURRECTION

William Lane Craig is one of the most renowned apologists (defenders of the Christian faith) on the planet. Here, Craig does a masterful job of reasonably defending the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

HOW CAN WE GET THROUGH THE WORST DAY OF OUR LIFE? THE ANSWER IS EASTER.

Watch this powerful video message by Rick Warren as he explains how “Easter” has given he & his family the reason to live life, despite his son taking his life one year ago.

Wanting to do some additional study for this upcoming class, I waived down two Mormon Missionaries last week. All I wanted to do was visit with them about what Mormons truly believe. I figured, if anyone “knew their stuff,” it would be Mormon Missionaries. I will share what my new Mormon friends told me at our class on May 4th.

HYMNS: THE SONGS THAT JUST WON’T GO AWAY (And I Couldn’t be happier)

It thrills me when I run across blogs that state a new generation is learning for themselves why hymns are so powerful, and that these “personal testimonies put to music” will never go out of style.

THE BIBLE & ITS DECREASING INFLUENCE ON NORTH AMERICANS

When I read statistics telling me that church attendance nationwide is decreasing it saddens me. But, based on this blog, it shouldn’t surprise anyone. Paul wrote that “Faith comes from hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) So, if the Bible (the word of Christ) is not only not being read, but increasingly disrespected, the only outcome is a generation becoming more and more indifferent about God.

APOLOGETICS – HOW CAN WE KNOW THAT GOD IS REAL?

We get our word “apologetics” from the Greek word (“apologia”) Peter uses for “giving a defense” in 1 Peter 3:15.

The evidence of God’s existence is overwhelming. Here’s just one piece of evidence.

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

This week’s “laughter” comes from my good friend Beverly McBeath. A couple of weeks ago she sent me a list of puns. Here are a few of my favorites:

1) I tried to catch some fog. I mist.
2) Jokes about German sausage are the wurst.
3) How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it.
4) I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words.
5) Class trip to the Coca-Cola factory. I hope there’s no pop quiz.
6) Energizer bunny arrested: Charged with battery.

GRACE NOTES: “Where Was Jesus When My Son Took His Life?”

God decided only this past Sunday morning to give me powerful insight into the answer to this question. Like Rick Warren said, “The answer is Easter.” Click the link below to read what God showed me.

BIBLE LEARNING SERIES: “When the Mormons Come Knocking”

May 4th; 5pm; BHBC Worship Center; teacher, Nick Watts

Only one session, we’ll learn the key questions to ask when engaging in conversation with people representing any “faith-belief system” other than biblcial Christianity.

In regard, specifically, to the LDS Church (Mormons), should you invite LDS missionaries into your home you will immediately discover that the terms THEY use are exactly the terms WE use. So what’s the problem?

Also, is biblical Christianity REALLY the ONLY truth out there? That’s an awfully narrow-minded perspective, isn’t it?

Finally, the following paragraph is from the official Mormon web site: “Faith in Jesus Christ is a firm conviction that He is who He says He is and that He will help us when we seek Him. Faith in Christ means trusting in Him, remembering Him, and following His teachings. It is a conviction that He is the Son of God, “The way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).”

What is NOT true about that paragraph? Could it be that the Mormon Church believes the same thing we do? If so, why all the controversy?

Great questions. We’ll answer every one of them on May 4th. 🙂

WHY WE CHOOSE SUICIDE

My wife, Michelle, brought this video clip to my attention. This speaker is not speaking at a Christian event, so there is no reference to how our faith factors into the issue of suicide. However, the speaker – speaking from experience – does his best to explain the mind of a suicidal person. It is very powerful and gave me insight, potentially, into my son’s thought process the morning he took his life. It was hard for me to watch, but insightful. The clip is 15 minutes in length. So, should you be interested, you’ll need to wait until you have some uninterupted time.

POWERFUL TESTIMONY OF HOW ONE MAN CAME TO CHRIST

Hopefully, you’ve had the chance to view the movie, “God’s Not Dead.” In the movie there is an Asian college student from atheistic family who eventually decides there is evidence for the existence of God. That character in the movie is based on this real-life story. Enjoy. 🙂 http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/04/03/chinese-surgeons-real-life-switch-from-atheism-to-christianity-inspired-a-central-character-in-gods-not-dead/

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

This week’s entry is a little different. Rather than a “quote”, it’s a very short “news article.” I’m not sure if you’ll laugh, or moan, or both. It’s unbelievable. I don’t really have words to describe it…..

GRACE NOTES: “Bitter or Better: It’s Your Choice” – This week, you’ll read an excerpt from a letter I received a couple of years ago. It is powerful. Jesus never once said that life woud be easy. In fact, He both modeled and said the exact opposite. The key lies in our response.
