All You Wanted to Know about the BHBC Music Ministry (and more)

MUSIC NOTES: 4.22.14

Preacher: Dr. Jerry Joplin; for prep, read through John 21.
Choir: “Love Comes to Town”

Well, after you blew me away this past Sunday morning (I lost count of how many people told me how powerful the choir was), I can NOT wait for May 11th!

PLEASE – even if you’ve missed rehearsals – come join me in this musical/artistic mission. We filled the loft last May for “The Story”, as well as for our Christmas Musical last December. I need someone in every seat.

The Truth That Gives Power to the Musical: I can’t overstate the power of the message of the cross. I’ll leave the communication of the cross’ power to Paul, who wrote, “When you were dead in your sins…, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us ALL our sins, having CANCELED the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the CROSS. And having disarmed the [satanic] powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the CROSS.” (Colossians 2:13-15)

Remaining Rehearsals: (1) Wed., 4/23, (2) Wed., 4/30, (3) Sun., 5/4, 3-5pm, (4) Wed., 5/7, (5) Sat., 5/10, 10:30-Noon.

Performances: 5/11 – 9:15am and 10:45am

BIBLE LEARNING SERIES: “When the Mormons Come Knocking”

May 4th; 5pm; BHBC Worship Center; teacher, Nick Watts; One session only.

We’ll learn THREE KEY QUESTIONS to ask when engaging in conversation with people representing any “faith-belief system” other than biblical Christianity.

What this class will NOT be:
(1) A time to bash or insult people of the Mormon faith. They are some of the kindest people you’ll ever meet.
(2) An opportunity to learn all we can about the Mormon faith. Not being a Mormon, I am neither qualified nor equipped to fulfill that objective. If you want to know more about the Mormon faith, flag down a Mormon Missionary like I did. 🙂

What this class WILL be:
(1) A lesson in biblical truth where conflicting “faith/belief systems” are concerned.
(2) An opportunity to identify the THREE KEY DIFFERENCES between biblical Christianity and every other “faith/belief system”.
(3) An opportunity to learn what to say to a Mormon Missionary who knocks on your door, or a Mormon friend when/if you should engage in faith-related dialogue.
(4) An opportunity to learn how to most effectively share your faith with a Mormon.

Leonard Cohen’s 30 year old, hauntingly beautiful “Hallelujah” continues to make a comeback as various artists are given legal permission to re-record it with new lyrics. This brand new Easter version is absolutely gorgeous.

I like to keep you updated on Pastor Abedini (imprisoned in Iran solely due to his faith in Jesus). In case you missed it, here is a letter written by Abedini to encourage believers during this Easter season.

I rarely watch Stephen Colbert (heir to David Letterman’s “Late Show” show on CBS.) I have read Dr. Bart Erhman’s book, “Who Is Jesus?” Colbert is Catholic. Ehrman is, in his own words, “agnostic with atheistic leanings.” Colbert is a talk show host/comedian. Ehrman is a Ph.D. professor of New Testament at the University of NC. Watch as Colbert, in comedic form no less, reduces Ehrman to looking like an imbicile.

Most of these types of articles are a complete waste of editorial space. However, I really liked this one. Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno as the host of NBC’s “Late Nite.”

I thought this was well written and very informative.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER: May 1st, in front of the Lubbock County Courthouse downtown. At noon, there will be a meeting on the lawn next to the gazebo structure there for community prayer.

This week’s entry comes from a tweet (a post on the social media site, Twitter) I saw this past week.

(In light of Easter, the person posted the following:) “The most hilarious line in the Bible is Matthew 27:65. In regard to guarding Jesus’ tomb, Pilate gave these instructions: ‘Go, make it as secure as you can.’ Uh…Good luck w/that.”

GRACE NOTES: “How to Handle a Critic” – We’ve all got’em. Here’s some practical, biblical wisdom for how to respond (if at all.)

Soli Deo Gloria, Nick
