New Choral Music – A LOT of it! And you’re gonna LOVE it.
Dec. 6-7 – Christmas! – Like we did a few years back with “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”, we’re doing a BIG musical this coming Christmas. The musical is called, “For Unto Ya’ll: A Cowboy Christmas”. Performance dates: Dec. 6 & 7.

KELSIE WATTS MINI-CONCERT TO BE RESCHEDULED

When Kelsie & I scheduled her time with us we both knew that, since her Fall classes hadn’t begun yet, there would be the opportunity for unforeseen events to preclude her from coming – and that’s exactly what has happened. I’ll update you when we get her rescheduled.

YOU’RE LOCATED WHERE??

So, of one of my HBU Apologetics Professors is British. And, thanks to modern technology, he’s actually teaching our class from Oxford University in England! (My son, Jordan, would be going nuts at this…..he would think this is so cool.) Both, apologists, C.S. Lewis and Alister McGrath studied at Oxford. Jordan & I actually met McGrath and heard his lecture on Lewis in April 2013 at LCU here in Lubbock. Also, Michelle & I had the pleasure of visiting Oxford with our Concert Choir way back in college (HSU) when we sang and toured in England & Wales. This. Is. So. Cool.

“I ASKED THE LORD” (John Newton)

Most know John Newton for writing the lyrics to the beloved hymn, Amazing Grace.  But, Newton, over time, became a strong theologian and preacher, writing many sermons, poems and lyrics.  Here’s one such poem that the folks at Indelible Grace have put to music.  It’s gorgeous.

“GOD’S NOT DEAD”

The success of the movie, “God’s Not Dead,” (a fantastic film) has spurred another movie produced by the same company.  Read on….

DEATH ROW JESUS

You probably remember the marketing of “Tattoo Jesus” in Lubbock not too long ago.  It was very effective.  The producer’s next “video sermon” will be “Death Row Jesus.”

GLORIETA, NM – REPORT

WOW!! The preacher for the Men’s Retreat I helped lead was a man named Jimmy Draper.  Perhaps you’ve heard of him. He was the pastor of FBC, Euless, for many years. He was President of the Southern Baptist Convention, President of the SBC Sunday School Board, and President of Lifeway. Now retired, he still preaches about 40 times a year. He was INCREDIBLE. Such a humble man – and a wonderful expositor of the Scriptures. GREAT NEWS: Truman has called Jimmy and has him tentatively scheduled to preach here next March.

NEWS FROM THE “FRONT LINES

Gail White is Admin. Asst. to the Pastor. Her son, Jeremy, is returning from a Mission Trip to India. Jeremy’s friend, Ryan Roberts, posted a report on his Facebook page. Below is an excerpt. The “don’t get too fanatical” mentality of North American Christianity can prevent us from understanding that, just because outbreaks of the Holy Spirit are rare in North America – in those areas of the world where people are broken, persecuted and hungry – all heaven is breaking loose. I asked Gail if I could share an excerpt.  Here it is:

Over 1,000 people showed up to a packed [worship service here in] India even though it was an annual Hindu festival HOLIDAY. And we saw many MIRACLES take place right in FRONT OF OUR OWN EYES including many former Hindus PRAYING to receive CHRIST, people giving personal HEALING testimonies….and even EVIL SPIRITS being casted out in the name of JESUS right in front of us!

I know many of us, including myself, are probably not all that familiar with demon possession, but in the Bible, Jesus tells us to cast out demons, and Jesus even did it many times Himself in Scripture, but I had NEVER seen anything for myself on the level that I saw it at church yesterday, and it’s probably due to the fact that so many people in India worship false IDOLS and practice many demonic rituals. Literally, people would come up to me (seemingly fine) and say that they were being attacked by evil spirits, and then I would simply LOOK at them, call out the DEMON, touch their head or hold their hands, and start PRAYING to JESUS. Every time I did this, the people would start violently SHAKING and SCREAMING and then COLLAPSE to the ground, sometimes even trying to PUNCH me, but as I would continue praying over them and telling the demons to LEAVE in the name of JESUS, they would eventually STOP fighting me, peacefully close their eyes, remain in a restful SLEEPING state for a while, and then eventually sit up and start WORSHIPING JESUS!

As [Jeremy and I] were discussing the various intense demon stories though, I was reminded of this powerful verse found in Luke 10:17-20: “When the disciples returned, they joyfully reported to Jesus, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!” “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among demons and crush them. Nothing will injure you. But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”

WHEN SR. PASTORS BECOME….SOMETHING ELSE

Spot-on blog by respected, long-time pastor, Chuck Swindoll. It never ceases to amazes me how church members forget (or have never read) that “wicked, man-centered religious leadership” is found throughout Scripture. Bottom line: just because a man holds a Sr. Pastor position (or, any pastoral position), it doesn’t automatically mean he’s walking with God. About the wicked religious leadership of the first century, Jesus said, “You shall know a tree by its fruit.”

From Swindoll’s blog: “It’s easy for the pastor to become authoritarian. What does that look like? If the minister needlessly represses the freedom of God’s people, if he becomes inflexible and dictatorial, tyrannical and oppressive, if he bullies people with threats, if he lacks a servant’s heart, if he himself is not teachable, if his arrogance has replaced humility, then he has become an authoritarian. He needs reproof . . . even if he is the pastor… [This is] not the same as leadership….Put bluntly, it is sin.” (Remainder of blog below)

MILLENNIALS WARN CHURCHES AGAINST CATERING TO THEIR GENERATION

EXCELLENT blog by the Associated Baptist Press. Having done my own due diligence, research, interviews, etc., I already knew this. But, it was rewarding to see it in print. Enjoy.

NINE REASONS PEOPLE AREN’T SINGING IN WORSHIP

WHY THE OLD HYMNS NOT ONLY STILL MATTER, BUT ARE VITAL TO OUR WORSHIP

The following was sent to me by a Youth Pastor friend of mine in the DFW area:

Hi Nick, I came across the statement below in a parenthetical paragraph about doctrine being passed down through hymns (a practice you know stems from the NT). The book is written for High School grads & college freshmen. As a side note, they challenged students to read a hymnal and look at how each song presented the gospel in capsule. Here’s the quote: “Did you know, by the way, that the hymns of the church throughout history were intended primarily for that purpose — to teach and reinforce sound doctrine? … These songs weren’t just to dance to. They were to learn from.”

WHAT WOULD LIFE BE WITHOUT MUSIC?

HOW THE WORLD’S MOST NOTORIOUS ATHEIST CHANGED HIS MIND

British philosopher, Antony Flew, was the 20th century’s champion of atheism. When atheists couldn’t answer an argument, or felt they were losing ground, they would call on Flew.

But then Flew, a genuine thinker, made a decision that shocked the atheistic world – he changed his mind. The evidence for the existence of God, Flew discovered, was not only overwhelming, but indefensible.

Flew died in 2010. But, in 2007, he published his story of what made him change his mind. It’s fascinating (and a very hard read – I’ve had to read some pages three times.) The man was absolutely brilliant. His story provides invaluable insight into the mind of a true thinker, and former atheist.

Flew held to the Socratic maxim, “You must go where the argument/evidence leads.” I hold to this, as well. The Bereans, as recorded in Acts 17, held to this maxim as well for Luke recorded that they, “Examined the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul was teaching was true.”

Should you be interested, his book is entitled, “There is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind.” Harper One Publishing; 2007.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

“Then war broke out in heaven….” (Revelation 12:7)

I just finished the best book/commentary I’ve read on this topic: “Spiritual Warfare: A Biblical & Balanced Perspective”, by Brian Borgman & Rob Ventura. By far, the best “non-commentary” piece of literature I’ve read on this topic (and those who’ve read it will, no doubt, agree with me) is C.S. Lewis’ “The Screwtape Letters.

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“My friends, it is one thing to go to church or chapel; it is quite another thing to go to God.” 19th century, British pastor, Charles Spurgeon

“Christians, too, belong not in the seclusion of a cloistered life but in the midst of enemies.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (I’m reminded of a moment when a student of mine was telling me about her new part-time job. She bemoaned, “I’m the only Christian there!” My one-word reply: “Perfect.”)

“Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” Mark Twain

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE: From the lips of Robin Williams….

“Never pick a fight with an ugly person, they’ve got nothing to lose.”

“We’ve had cloning in the South for years. It’s called cousins.”

“Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?

AUGUST 27TH! Adult Choir Rehearsal Resumes!

FYI: INTRODUCING THE BHBC PRAISE TEAM (AGAIN)

We would’ve reintroduced a Praise Team (vocalists) a year ago but, when my son took his life, everything came to a screeching halt. That said, God’s timing is always perfect. (Read through the gospels and you’ll find that Jesus was never in a hurry – but He was never late.)

Except for one name, all Praise Team members are “new faces.” We will actually employ two Praise Teams that alternate weekly. In addition, their role as worship leaders will be drastically different. As I shared with them in an email: “You are NOT “back-up singers”. The “pips” were great for Gladys Knight, but not for leading people to an acute awareness of Jesus Christ.” These men & women will be out front leading our people to the throne of Christ via the arts. Their first Sunday will be August 24th.

PASTOR SEARCH TEAM UPDATE

As stated last week, the Personnel Team & Church Council will convene this coming Sunday, 8/10, to begin mapping out the path to form our Search Team.  I will update you here as new information is made available.

THE EPIDEMIC OF BIBLE ILLITERACY

From the blog: “Four in 10 American adults can’t name the first book of the Bible. (That’s almost HALF!) More than half can’t name the first four books of the New Testament. About 80 percent think “God helps those who help themselves” is a Bible verse.”  ***This topic correlates directly to the following two news items.  How on earth can believers know what is right and what is wrong according to the Bible if they have no idea what the Bible says?

SOBERING TRUTH ABOUT OUR NATIONAL FREEDOM

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” President Ronald Reagan.

“What one generation tolerates, the next will embrace.” John Wesley

MORALITY: WHAT (OR WHO) DECIDES WHAT IS “RIGHT & WRONG” ON PLANET EARTH?

This brief, 5 minute debate (link below) exposes the inane, paint-yourself-into-a-corner philosophy of atheism where this particular topic is concerned.

On the left is Dr. Frank Turek, Christian and president of Crossexamined.org. On the right is David Silverman, president of American Atheists.

At the 3:30 mark, Dr. Turek asks Silverman, “[So, if morality is relative, and not God, but society, decides what is good & evil, and the Nazis truly believed what they were doing was ‘good,’] then we had no real way to condemn the Nazis for what they did.” Silverman’s answer is deplorable.

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“Prayer is the gasoline that the engine of the Kingdom runs on.” Greg Boyd

“God’s plan A for your life is that you will go through regular periods of suffering. And there is no plan B. (2 Timothy 2:3.)” Dr. Clay Jones, Biola University

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE

AS WE APPROACH THE ANNIVERSARY OF ELVIS’ DEATH…I SHARE THIS “INSPIRING” STORY….

Sitting in our Family Room watching “Elvis on Tour”. My daughter, Macy, walks in from her supper date, sees that Elvis is in the middle of his “American Trilogy”, and says, “Hey dad, can you pause it so I go can change clothes real fast? I don’t wanna miss this.” (I was soooo proud.)

Then she follows up with, “If I could be anyone it would be Elvis – well, Jesus, then Elvis.”

GRACE NOTES: “A Literal Picture of Grace So Amazing”

I’m taking a one-week break from my series on “The Armor of God” to share with you an issue that, I am convinced, plagues the Body of Christ: unforgiveness. Please consider reading my testimony of how I forgave my dad. When I preached on this topic at Southcrest (here in Lubbock) years ago, a man approached me after the service and said, “I’ve been bitter and held a grudge for 40 years. Tonight, I have forgiven.” There’s not one thing easy about forgiving – satan makes certain of that. But “forgiving” is one of the things we do that perfectly aligns our heart with the heart of Christ, Himself, who forgave us.
