BHBC COLLEGE BIBLE FELLOWSHIP – Sundays @ 6pm

FYI – I’ve now been teaching our BHBC college students for a little over a month.  We’ve had wonderful attendance and participation.  (Every single one of them brings their Bibles every time!)

In addition to unpacking a number of biblical passages together, this past Sunday we answered the question, “What makes the Bible unique among all ancient and modern literature?”  As believers, we already know what makes it unique – it’s the Word of God.  But, what if the question was asked by a skeptic who has no regard for the Bible whatsoever?  (In other words, the answer, “It’s the Word of God,” won’t work.) This is how we approached the question.  And the answer, we all discovered, is inspiring!

Please, if you know a college student looking for a place to learn God’s Word, and get to know some wonderful, loving peers, send them our way.  Sunday evenings @ 6pm, in Annex 3 (the house on 54th across the street from the church.)

THE MORMONS: A CHRISTIAN RESPONSE

They’re some of the nicest people on the planet and, often, refer to themselves as Christians.  So, they must believe what we believe, right?  Our Youth Pastor, Don Baldwin, has asked me to, once again, join the youth tomorrow evening to offer a Christian response to our Mormon friends & neighbors.  This will be a summary of the class I taught to our entire church on a Sunday night back in May.  Know anyone who may find this topic of interest?  Send them our way tomorrow evening (10/29), 7:30pm, BHBC Youth Room.

The best modern book on this topic is written by former BYU professor, former Mormon, Lynn Wilder, entitled, Unveiling Grace.  I have been in contact with Lynn, enjoying an exchange of emails, and am in the process of scheduling her to visit us in the future.

ATTN: PARENTS – THIS WILL MAKE YOU TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT WHAT YOUR KIDS ARE WATCHING

You know it’s bad when the secular press writes about how immoral prime-time tv has become.

From the editorial: “So you have had at least two generations of kids who have grown up with declining standards of what’s appropriate. And they are now raising kids with almost no standards at all when it comes to media consumption.”

Personally, the following passage comes to mind: “After that,…another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done…” (Judges 2:10)

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“The tooth of time gnaws all books but the Bible… Nineteen centuries of experience have tested it. It has passed through critical fires no other volume has suffered, and its spiritual truths have endured the flames and come out without so much as the smell of burning.” – W.E. Sangster (20th century British pastor; served in WWI)

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” – G.K. Chesterton

“Sometimes when we get overwhelmed we forget how big God is.” – A.W. Tozer

“Do all religions lead to God? Actually *no* religion leads us to God — only *God* can lead us to God, and that is what is [offered to us] in Jesus.” – Andy Bannister

“As a literary historian, I am perfectly convinced that whatever else the Gospels are they are not legends. I have read a great deal of legend and I am quite clear that they are not the same sort of thing. They are not artistic enough to be legends. From an imaginative point of view they are clumsy, they don’t work up to things properly. Most of the life of Jesus is totally unknown to us, as is the life of anyone else who lived at that time, and no people building up a legend would allow that to be so.” – C.S. Lewis

THE CONCERT WAS AMAZING

Thank you so much for allowing me to attend Kelsie’s Sr. Recital/Concert in Nashville. I sat there in disbelief. One of the songs she performed, “Stay,” is a song she wrote for Jordan. I just wept. Here’s a photo taken during the concert.

HER JOURNEY FROM ATHEISM TO JESUS

HBU’s Dr. Ordway is my adviser and I’ve posted news regarding her recent book before.  However, she continues to “knock it out of the ballpark” by speaking truth in love, and offering compelling evidence for Christianity being an intelligent faith.  You will enjoy this short interview.

From the interview: “Sometimes I’ll hear atheists argue that ‘you don’t have to believe in God to be a moral person.’ I agree! I know from my own experience that atheists can be moral people and do good deeds. What I couldn’t do, as an atheist, was to give a compelling reason * why * I had this moral sense, or to explain why I recognized that my efforts to be good always fell short of my ideals.”

So humbled to be a part of the MAA program at HBU.

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“Jesus had the ability to profoundly disagree with people [their lifestyles] while, simultaneously, profoundly loving and caring for them.” Pastor Pete Wilson expositing Mark 2:15-17. (Pete is the pastor of Crosspoint Community Church in Nashville, TN – this is where Kelsie attends. We enjoyed attending with her this past Sunday.)

“It is on [planet earth] that a great duty falls upon us all, to be the bearers of God’s forgiveness, to be the instrument of His love, to be active in compassion…God moves in His own mysterious ways, but a great deal of the time He moves through us. And it is because we are not [paying attention to Him] that so many do not believe in God’s love…No one is too weak, too vile, too unimportant, to be God’s instrument.” Alan Paton (1903-1988)

This quote is not a de-emphasizing of praying for the sick by Dr. Richard Ross, but rather an encouragement to think through our prayer emphases: “If, one entire Sunday, your church fasted from praying for sick people–and only prayed over current glory of Christ–wonderful or awkward?”

10 THINGS EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ISLAM

Well written. From the Christian Coalition blog…

THE FIFTH GOSPEL

This was posted on the HBU Apologetics FB page by my Oxford Professor. From the author: “The late British evangelist Gypsy Smith once quipped, ‘There are five Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the Christian, but most people never read the first four.” (Ouch)

I’ve ordered the book. Haven’t read it yet. Looking forward to doing so. The author is a personal friend of the professor I mentioned.

A THEOLOGY OF SEXUALITY

I taught this to our BHBC students last Wed. night. Outside of the clear biblical teaching of homosexuality being sin, there is nothing easy about this topic. “I’ve raised a gay child. Are you telling me homosexuality is sin?” This is what one Christian mom asked me last week. My response did not compromise Scripture, but it is too lengthy to print here. With Evangelical Christian churches softening their position on homosexuality, as well as the Catholic Church softening its stand this week (conservative Catholics describe this as “betrayal”), it is well worth our time to study the Word of God deeply where this explosive and divisive topic is concerned. NOTE: One’s response to the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality is not the litmus test for adherence to the Gospel – but satan is trying to make it so. My notes from my talk to the BHBC students are below.

THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF APOLOGETICS

Very well-written. After the intro, you can click on the different “commandments” to be taken to different links where the author elaborates on his thoughts.

There’s a reason Jesus said, “By this all will know if you’re my disciple – if you love one another,” and Paul said, “Speak the truth in love.” If LOVE doesn’t lead in our walk and our talk, what we have to say (regardless of how intelligent it might sound) will, as Paul rightly described, come across to our listener(s) as “a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” (Jn. 13:35; Eph. 4:15; 1 Cor. 13:1)

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“A scared world needs a fearless church.” – A.W. Tozer

“Don’t judge a man by where he is, because you don’t know how far he has come.” – C.S. Lewis

“Preach not calmly and quietly as though you were asleep, but preach with fire and pathos and passion.” – Charles Spurgeon (right or wrong, I don’t know how to preach any other way :))

“Belief doesn’t create truth. Unbelief doesn’t destroy truth. Christian faith goes beyond reason but not against reason.” —Paul E. Little (from, Know Why You Believe)

“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” – C. S. Lewis  (I love this quote.) 🙂

JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT LAST SUNDAY: AMAZING GRACE

I’VE STARTED MY BOOK. I’VE TITLED IT: “I’VE GOT THIS”

It’s a work-in-progress. It may take me two years to write it. But, the Holy Spirit is “opening the eyes of my heart” so that I can articulate to others how “present a help is our God in times of trouble.” (cf. Psalm 46:1)

In addition to my words, the book will include some of the gut-wrenching-psalm-like poems written by Michelle, as well as Jordan’s artwork.  I’ve already had professionals offer to do my editing.

Writing this book is based not on “needed therapy,” but on “righteous conviction.” God’s made it abundantly clear – this world is FULL of hurting people who need to be encouraged to focus on Truth – for the Truth really will set you free.

Throughout our journey since Jordan walked into Paradise, Jesus has continually whispered to us, “I’ve got this. Trust Me.”

A BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO HOMOSEXUALS

Based on the number of times this topic has come up between me & students/adults, I finally wrote an essay I entitled, “A Theology of Sexuality.” My good friend Don Baldwin (our Youth Pastor) asked me to speak to our BHBC students tomorrow evening, 11/8, at 7:30pm, on this topic.

Notice that I titled this section “A Biblical Response to Homosexuals”, and not “A Biblical Response to Homosexuality.” After showing our students from the Scriptures what most – if not all – raised in West Texas already know (that the Bible does indeed condemn homosexuality as a sin), we will move onto what the Bible says in regard to how we, as Christians, are to respond to the gay community.

I love Rick Warren’s following statement and will use it tomorrow evening: “Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”

Here is a powerful testimony by Christian singer/songwriter, Dennis Jernigan (a former homosexual): http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/10/02/christian-singers-controversial-journey-revealed-in-new-documentary-i-placed-homosexuality-on-jesus-shoulders/

BHBC COLLEGE MINISTRY

The Lord, through Keno & Leslie Martin and Andy and Tami Hines, has provided much-needed “ownership” of our College Ministry.  A few weeks ago, Leslie asked me to pray about teaching our College Students on a weekly basis.  I prayed, and happily accepted the invitation.  We meet on Sunday evenings at 6pm.  We just finished our second week of mining the Scriptures together.  Pray for our college ministry! 🙂

DEEP STUFF

Despite modern technology, here is a reminder of how vast our planet is…

From the article:

[The last map of the ocean floor was produced 20 years ago. With this new map], instead of seeing 5,000 old volcanoes down there, now we can see 10,000,” said David Sandwell, a geophysics professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego who led the study. Scientists know remarkably little about the deep-sea floor. Sandwell thinks of it almost as a separate planet in our solar system that we have only begun to explore. “We have maps of Mars that have 100 to 10,000 times more resolution than maps of the deep ocean,” he said.

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“A man (or woman) who says, ‘I was wrong,’ really in effect says, ‘I am a little wiser today than I was yesterday.” Charles Spurgeon

“Atheists are often more informed on the Bible and Christian doctrine and history than most Christians…” Joel Furches  (ouch)

“God is no fonder of intellectual slackers than of any other slackers. If you are thinking of being a Christian, I warn you: you are embarking on something that is going to take the whole of you, brains and all.” C.S. Lewis

QUOTE(s) OF THE WEEK

“Christians are not so much in danger when they are persecuted as when they are admired.” Charles Spurgeon

“There can be little doubt the brief passages cannot and must not take the place of reading the Scripture as a whole.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Nick adds: Study the entire Bible. Jesus is present on every page. He is, as theologians have described, “in the Old Testament concealed, and in the New Testament revealed.”)

GRACE NOTES: “Moving at the Speed of Grief”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about our grief associated with our son, Jordan Blake Watts’, suicide. This is not because we don’t still have our moments of acute grief (Michelle Pittam Watts broke down two weeks ago, I broke down last week) – rather, it’s simply because God’s not instructed me to share from that area of the Watts family – until today.

For those who are hurting deeply…..
