SEARCHING FOR A NEW PASTOR: A BRIEF THEOLOGY

Don’t read anything into the timing of this blog – the Search Team at BHBC is 100% solid.

I’ve actually been writing this blog for years – a little at a time. Now, serving in my third successive church while searching for a pastor, the Holy Spirit impressed me to finish it out and publish it. Enjoy…

“DECONVERSION”

Whenever I read someone’s theology/worldview, etc., I try and find out something about their journey as to how they arrived at their present convictions. While reading Dr. Mike Licona’s (one of my prof’s) review of Dr. Bart Ehrman’s book, Forged, (a book arguing for the forgery of the canonical gospels) I couldn’t help but notice how Dr. Ehrman, after studying at the prestigious – and conservatively Christian – Moody Bible Institute“jettisoned his faith while teaching at Rutgers.” Dr. Ehrman, a New Testament scholar and professor at the University of NC, describes himself as an “agnostic with atheistic leanings.”  (Coincidentally, I plan on attending – online – Moody Bible Institute after I complete my degree at HBU.)

Disclaimer: My personal conviction is that Scripture clearly teaches there is no such thing as “deconversion”. To cite a few passages, the Parable of the Sower, Jesus’ words to Nicodemus about being “born again” (physically, it’s possible to change your convictions, but it’s impossible to be “un-born”), and Paul’s teaching that we are “sealed with the Holy Spirit” at conversion, all reinforce, in my opinion, the doctrine of “once genuinely saved, always saved.” To be able to somehow “un-earn” our salvation infers we were able to “earn” it, which is heresy.  We are saved “by grace, through faith, in Christ alone.”  He “earned” our salvation.  So, these people listed below, in my opinion, never truly professed faith in Christ, but merely “tasted”.

The reason the “deconversion” of Ehrman’s life jumped out at me like a neon light is because of, both, articles I’ve read and visits I’ve had just in the past several months.  “Deconversion” has become a trend, of sorts. It reminds me of Paul’s warning to Timothy about the End Times“Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1)

1. Christian Sociologist, Tony Campolo’s son, Bart, made internet headlines with his deconversion. Bart is now the Humanist Chaplain at USC. You can hear part of his story here.
2. George Perdikis, co-founder of the Christian band, The NewsBoys, recently posted his deconversion. You can read it here.
3. Last semester, I had a wonderful 2-hour visit with an ardent atheist friend of mine. I learned a lot about his background. For instance, 6 years ago he was attending a local Christian church and teaching a Men’s Bible Class. But, over time, he “deconverted.”
4. Former pastor, Ryan Bell, published his story on CNN’s web site. He stated, “My appreciation for life and its potential increased when I stepped away from my faith.” You can read his story here.

DR. HOLLY ORDWAY, DR. NANCY PEARCEY & PROFESSOR MARY JO SHARP

Christianity Today is doing a story on Women Apologists. And these three HBU prof’s are all being interviewed. Dr. Ordway, far left, is my advisor.  I have books in my library by Dr. Ordway (an avowed atheist prior to her profession of faith in Christ) and Dr. Pearcey (center.)  These ladies are absolutely brilliant.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“If someone hurts you, first try to figure out if that hurt was intentional. Not every hurt is an attack.” Author Unknown

“Describe the God you rejected… Describe the God you don’t believe in… Maybe I don’t believe in *that* God either.” —Tim Keller, pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC.

Never Forget: Christianity Requires Faith – But So Does Darwinian Evolution“Evolution itself is accepted by zoologists not because it has been observed or… can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true; but because the only alternative, Special Creation, is clearly incredible.” – C.S. LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE:

Truisms….

1) I don’t do drugs. I get the same effect just standing up fast.
2) I live in my own little world. But it’s OK. They know me here.
3) Every time I walk into a singles bar I can hear Mom’s wise words: “Don’t pick that up, you don’t know where it’s been!”
4) A good friend will come and bail you out of jail…but, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, “Wow that was fun!!”
5) I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose-fitting clothing. If I HAD any loose-fitting clothing, I wouldn’t have signed up in the first place!
6) When I was young we used to go “skinny dipping,” now I just “chunky dunk.”
7) Don’t argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
8) Why is it that our children can’t read a Bible in school, but they can in prison? (good point)
9) If raising children was going to be easy, it never would have started with something called LABOR!

SUNDAY EVENING PREACHING/TEACHING SERIES – “AWAKENINGS: THE AFTERLIFE”

stairway to heaven

We had a great crowd last Sunday evening as we took a deep dive into what Jesus called Paradise.  It’s where our loved ones are right now, and will continue to be until the end of the world when, as John writes, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth  had passed away…” (Revelation 21:1)  This Sunday, we discover what the Bible tells us about the “New Heaven & New Earth.”  Join us!  5:30-6:15pm.  (For all you old “rockers” like myself, I gotta give props to Mike Lewis who said the photo here reminds him of Stairway to Heaven. 🙂

WHY YOUR MILLENNIAL OUTREACH NEEDS A BIT OF BONHOEFFER

bonhoeffer

I am somewhat of a student of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He was a pianist, a lover and defender of Scriptural truth, a Bible scholar, and an author. Bonhoeffer was executed in April, 1945, for “crimes” against Nazi Germany.  His “crime” was his attempt to overthrow Hitler for the purpose of saving Germany and protecting the Jews. Bonhoeffer was 39 when he died.  For those interested in learning about Bonhoeffer, I would recommend Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas. Almost 600 pages in length, the book is riveting, following Bonhoeffer’s life as a German Christian in Nazi Germany – a Christian not one bit willing to cowardly step aside so that Hitler could continue his reign of terror. My favorite book by Bonhoeffer is The Cost of Discipleship.

In the link provided here, the author does a solid job of translating Bonhoeffer’s biblical worldview into that generation of 20-somethings we typically label “millennials.” The article is brilliant. Enjoy.

MIT PHYSICS PROFESSOR CLAIMS SCIENCE HAS DISCOVERED GOD

Video is only 5 minutes – but a powerful 5 minutes.

50 SHADES OF…BLAH

blah

Mary Jo Sharp, professor in Apologetics at HBU, is spot-on here as she offers an extremely brief response to the recently released movie, 50 Shades of Grey.

So goes the culture in which we live. Full of the blah, blah, blah drone of a zombie culture looking for the next thing that will make it feel human once more, but gravely missing the mark yet again. Sleepers, awake! You were not created to be the walking dead, reduced to searching endlessly to satiate your immediate desires. You are made in the image of the glorious Creator! Bring sexuality back from the dead. It is a life-giving part of being human, not a zombified float on the surface of the earth. Where is our desire for the depths? Where is our dignity and resolve? Have we forgotten what it means to be human?… And yet, there is hope.

MASSIVE OCEAN DISCOVERED UNDER EARTH’S SURFACE

Excerpt: “It’s good evidence the Earth’s water came from within,” [than from comets, as some scientists theorize] says Steven Jacobsen of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The hidden water could also act as a buffer for the oceans on the surface, explaining why they have stayed the same size for millions of years.”

As I read this article, the very first thing I thought was, “This could well be how God ‘watered the earth’ prior to the days of Noah.” Check out Genesis 2:5-6: “Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.”

A LOVING, FORTHRIGHT RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S BLUNDER

I don’t typically include items in this post that are political in nature. However, in response to President Obama’s comparison of ISIS/Radical Islam to Christianity at the White House Prayer Breakfast recently, I thought this compassionate response by apologist, Ravi Zacharias was brilliant.

STAND BY ME

Ok, you got me.  I have a confession to make…  Gail White (Sr. Pastor’s Admin. Assistant) caught me dancing in my office to this arrangement of the classic, Stand By Me.  If you’ve ever seen me dance you know that it was far more startling to Gail than me.  🙂  Don’t judge, though!  See if, while listening to this you don’t begin at least tapping your foot….

GRACE NOTES: “Awakenings”

This is the last 9 minutes of the sermon I preached this past Sunday.  There is no video of me (as I instructed the A/V booth to leave the logo I chose on the screen).  However, the audio is good, and a video clip of the 1998 movie, Patch Adams, begins at the 3:15 mark.

Paul prayed that “the eyes of our hearts might be enlightened [flooded with light] so that we may know the hope to which He has called us…”  (Ephesians 1:18)

The 23rd Psalm

Without question, Psalm 23 is the most familiar & beloved psalm in the psalter.  I own a copy of Charles Spurgeon’s “Treasury of David,” Spurgeon’s personal commentary on the Psalms.  Consider the description of Psalm 23 as only Spurgeon could describe it…..

APOLOGETICS & SHARING OUR FAITH: KNOW WHY YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE

“…He who wins souls is wise.” (Proverbs 11:30, nkjv)

“The need for apologetics today is crucial. Believers must realize that we are living in a post-Christian era with a host of worldviews vying continuously for people’s commitments and, indeed, for their very lives. We must face these challenges head-on. Apologetics does not supplant faith, it supplements it. Nor does it replace the Spirit’s working. Rather, the Holy Spirit uses apologetic arguments as vehicles for clarifying the truth of God’s Word. The same verses commanding us to preach the gospel also instructs us to constantly be prepared to correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and careful instruction (2 Tim. 4:2).” – Hank Hanegraaff

UNVEILING GRACE: LYNN WILDER & ADAM’S ROAD MINISTRY @ BHBC, 8.2.15

While preparing for my presentation to BHBC almost a year ago on the topic of Biblical Christianity vs. Mormon Christianity, I was told there was no better book to equip me (aside from the Bible, of course) for responding to Mormons than Lynn Wilder’s book, “Unveiling Grace.” I contacted Lynn and invited her to come speak at BHBC. She agreed. More on her ministry as the event nears.

JIMMY DRAPER @ BHBC, MAR. 22-25

This past August, I had the privilege of leading a Men’s Retreat at Glorieta, NM, with Dr. Jimmy Draper. After pastoring churches for 35 years, Jimmy accepted the position of CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, TN, where he served until 2006. From 1982-84, he served as President of the Southern Baptist Convention. I could tell you more, but all I really want you to know is this: the man can PREACH! I still have the pages of notes I took that weekend. I couldn’t be more excited about him coming to challenge, exhort and encourage our local Body. Make plans now to attend. Jimmy will be preaching, both, mornings and evenings.

WORSHIPTAINMENT

“What if we take away the cool music and the cushioned chairs? What if the screens are gone and the stage is no longer decorated? What if the air conditioning is off and the comforts are removed? Would His Word still be enough for his people to come together?” (David Platt; Radical)

It was the late ’90’s, and I was in full-time Youth Ministry.  I sat in a planning meeting for a large upcoming Youth Ministry event and, almost word-for-word, asked the question cited above. There was silence.

Over the subsequent years, I simply grew weary of the strobe lights, over-the-top volume, and smoke machines.  Anyone who knows me, knows I love excitement.  (Heck, we did The “Hey” Song last Sunday and one of my vocalists leaped off the stage!) And, frankly, I’m not averse to strobes, volume, and smoke.  But, as with most anything, there’s a balance.  And, somewhere along the way, in my own personal opinion, large-event student ministry was losing its way.

Well, those teens from the late ’90’s are now adults in their 30’s.  So, it doesn’t surprise me that blogs like the one below are becoming more and more common.  As with any blog, this is simply one person’s opinion (the author.)  But, i thought what he had to say, as solid food-for-thought, was worth posting here.
