Murder of Jesus 2

APRIL 2nd; 7pm; BHBC Worship Center

On the evening before Good Friday, I will present a medical account of Jesus’ death. Just as our Christmas Eve Worship Service helps us to focus on the nativity, this Worship Service will help us focus on the Cross.

Only Christ’s love could endure this much suffering. Join me in the BHBC Worship Center.

BEHOLD THE POWER OF HOPE (CHRIST)

This past Sunday I had the honor of preaching two morning Worship Services at FBC, Canton, sharing how God has taught my family the power of prayer following Jordan’s death.  (My sermon title was: “Behold the Power of Hope.”) The second photo is me & Michelle with some of our former youth (I was Youth/Music Pastor there from 1988-1991).  A number of former students showed up Sunday.  It was so very rewarding seeing them again “all grown up” and having families of their own. 🙂

A CRITIQUE OF ISLAM

This is an interview with Dr. William Lane Craig, most likely the foremost apologist on the planet. Dr. Craig also serves on the faculty at HBU. The information in this interview is extremely interesting.

The interview is about an hour so you’ll need to set aside some time. However, I was inclined to include it so we can be more educated and informed in regard to how Christianity differs from Islam.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“How one grieves depends on what one believes...The counsel of Scripture secures us with a stabilizing beam of truth – beginning with a single word: hope. Your pain cannot [escape to] anywhere His Word cannot go.” – Dr. Frank Page; from his book “Melissa”, about his daughter’s suicide, and how his family survived – and are surviving – the pain.

BHBC Pastor Candidate Coming April 24-26

Yesterday evening, at the conclusion of our Encounter Worship Service, Search Team chairman, Chris Slayton, addressed the people (it was a great crowd), informing them that the Search Team feels they’ve found the right man to be BHBC’s next Lead Pastor.

Chris was unable to announce the man’s name, or where he is presently serving, due to the need for confidentiality.  Although news like this tends to find a way to leak out, BHBC wants to do our part in keeping the man’s personal information quiet since he will not announce this to his present church for a few more weeks.

Really, what Chris shared is all BHBC needs to know right now anyway.  Simply pray for the man and his family.  (God will know who you’re talking about. :))

The last weekend of April is the target date with meetings scheduled throughout i.e. meetings with staff, and a meet-and-greet/question & answer time with the entire church.  The exact itinerary will be published as the weekend nears.

The man will preach both AM & PM services on April 26th, with a vote scheduled to follow the PM service.  This was the same format followed when I came in view of a call 6 years ago.  (Presently, I’m actually the newest staff member.  That’s a good sign, folks.  That means when staff arrive, they don’t want to leave. :))

A final word on what “in view of a call” means…

Different denominations “call” pastors/staff differently.  Although the Bible is quite clear on the principles that should govern the search for any staff member, it does not give a specific “list of steps”.  These “steps” must be derived from said principles.  You can access my recent blog, “Searching for a New Pastor: A Brief Theology”, by clicking here.

Chris mentioned that the Search Team is 100% unified in their decision.  However, the reason a candidate, in Southern Baptist life, comes “in view of a call” is because the Church (not the Search Team) makes the final decision.  I do know men who have gone “in view of a call” and, for various reasons, did not receive the votes necessary to “accept said call.”  I also know men who received near unanimous votes but, for various reasons, decided, themselves, not to accept the “call” and stay where they were.  This is rare – but it happens.  That said, the Search Team has worked very hard on their part.  Now, BHBC (the Body) needs to do its part.  So, please plan on being at the appropriate meetings.  Ask whatever questions you may have.  And then, finally, vote your conviction.

NOTICE:  Nothing  – nothing – will prepare you more effectively for the last weekend in April than prayer.  Remember:  Much prayer = much power; Little prayer = little power; No prayer = no power.

Soli Deo Gloria, Nick

THE UNABATED JOY OF LEARNING….

I am grateful every day that BHBC has allowed me to further my education.  Below is a photo of the number of books I read, and subsequently used, on one of my most recent essays on C.S. Lewis.  My professor for this particular class, Dr. Michael Ward, is one of the foremost authorities on Lewis, and is invited to speak on Lewis at conferences around the globe.  Perhaps I can book him here at BHBC one day.  My other professor, Dr. Mike Licona, is one of the foremost authorities on the single most important event in human history:  the Resurrection of Christ.  More on Dr. Licona later. 🙂

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.” – C.S. Lewis; The Magician’s Nephew; The Chronicles of Narnia

“I know in their own terms what they saw was the raised Jesus. That’s what they say, and then all the historic evidence we have afterwards attests to their conviction that that’s what they saw. I’m not saying that they really did see the raised Jesus. I wasn’t there. But, as a historian, I do know that they must have seen something.” (Watts: Indeed, they did. :)) – Non-Christian, liberal scholar, Dr. Paula Fredriksen; Boston University; quoted by Dr. Mike Licona in an interview with Lee Strobel about the overwhelming historical evidence for the resurrection of Christ. Words in parentheses are mine.

“God desires to reveal to us that His capacity to forgive is bigger than our capacity to sin.” A.W. Tozer – “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” (Romans 5:20)

“The Holy Scriptures do not contain individual sayings, but are a whole and can be used most effectively as such…There can be little doubt the brief passages cannot and must not take the place of reading the Scripture as a whole.” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer (Watts:  With the availability today of modern, easy-to-read translations, you’ll have no problem finding one to help you “consume the Bible”. As you read the Bible you will meet a Presence. How do I know this? Because the author of Hebrews wrote, “the Word of God is alive and active.”)

“When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” – C.S. Lewis on having the heart & imagination of a child well into his 50’s.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“All religions are not the same. All religions do not point to God. All religions do not say that all religions are the same. At the heart of every religion is an uncompromising commitment to a particular way of defining who God is or is not and accordingly, of defining life’s purpose. Anyone who claims that all religions are the same betrays not only an ignorance of all religions but also a caricatured view of even the best-known ones. Every religion at its core is exclusive.”  – Ravi Zacharias

“The danger when men stop believing in God is not that they’ll believe in *nothing*; but that they will believe in *anything*.” – G.K. Chesterton  (Watts Commentary: This has been satan’s strategy since Eden i.e. “*Anything* is better than believing in God.”)

Forgiving the inexcusable - Lewis

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE: (One of my all-time favorites….)

A young Soldier and his Commander have to ride a train to a conference in Europe so they find their seats and find out they are in a cabin with a beautiful young woman and her grandmother facing each other.

Within the first hour everyone realizes that the young woman and the soldier are attracted to each other. Then the train goes through a tunnel and everyone hears a kissing sound and a loud slap.

On the other side of the tunnel the commander thinks, “I am glad my soldier was able to get a kiss but I wish she hadn’t missed him and slapped me.”

The Grandmother thinks, “Hmp, the nerve of the young man to kiss my granddaughter! Well at least he got what he deserved when she slapped him.”

The Granddaughter thinks, “That was nice of him to kiss me, but I wish my Grandmother hadn’t slapped him.”

The Soldier is thinking, “Wow, I got to kiss the girl and slap my commander all at once!”

NY TIMES – WHY OUR CHILDREN DON’T THINK THERE ARE MORAL FACTS

Even the NY Times “gets it.”

Here’s what our children (youth) are being taught. It’s indoctrination disguised as harmless education. Parents/pastors/youth leaders must step up and have intelligent dialogue with this generation of kids, helping them understand that a world with moral absolutes (for instance, murder is not only illegal, it’s wrong).

C.S. Lewis’ book, The Abolition of Man, is all about moral relativity. Like the antagonists in Lewis’ book, modern educators (the “big cheeses” who choose the curriculum) can’t have it both ways (moral relativism AND moral absolutes).

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“It is not the reading of many books which is necessary to make a man wise or good, but the well-reading of a few, could he be sure to have the best.” – Puritan preacher, Richard Baxter

“God whispers to us in health and prosperity but, being hard of hearing, we fail to hear God’s voice. Whereupon God turns up the amplifier by means of suffering. Then His voice booms.” – C.S. Lewis

“No human being could ever have possibly imagined that the Author of the Universe would end up writing a story which would include Himself slowly approaching His death at the hands of His own handwriting via the back of a pack animal.” – Daniel Ray; one of my MAA classmates at HBU

“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bears his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have Spring again.

“AWAKENINGS: THE AFTERLIFE” (audio now online)

One scholar said, “With heaven being such an important Christian doctrine, you’d think believers would talk more about it.  But they don’t.”

Well….at BHBC, we do! 🙂  And something stirs within a believer when we stop to contemplate what John Bunyan called “the Celestial City.”

You can access half-our session, “The Coming Kingdom,” (Part 2 of a 3 Part series) here.

Part 3 (this coming Sunday evening at 5:30pm) will specifically address the “healing properties” of a “mind set on heaven.”

SHARING YOUR FAITH CONFIDENTLY & BIBLICALLY

There is no “set” method for sharing one’s faith in Jesus Christ.  John wrote, “They triumphed over [the devil], by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” (Revelation 12:11)  So, one’s own “story” of how they came to trust Christ is very significant – and powerful.

That said, I still remember the method my own Youth Pastor taught me when I was in high school.  As a result, many of my friends came to Christ. (I still have the little New Testament my Youth Pastor gave me to help introduce Jesus to people.) 🙂  And since that time, I’ve used this same strategy not only with friends and acquaintances, but with my own children.  It’s called the Roman Road.  There are a number of comments I could include.  But, for brevity’s sake, I will make this succinct:

  1. Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  We begin with the “problem” – our separation from God.  This is bad news.  If the story ended here life would be meaningless.  But, we must start here – for unless one realizes this fundamental truth, they will see no need for continuing the conversation.
  2. Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is a sort of “bad news/good news” verse.  The bad: our separation from God (due to our sin) has a most horrific consequence: eternal death; hell.  However, this is what makes the Good News so very good…which leads us to the next passage.
  3. Romans 5:8 – “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  Despite our sin – God loves us! This is Good News! The “horrific consequences” mentioned above were taken/absorbed by Jesus Christ on the cross twenty centuries ago!  As a result, we now have the opportunity to put our faith in what Christ did for us…which leads us to the next/final passage.
  4. Romans 10:9-10 – “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. This is truly amazing grace.

NOTE:  Should you share this Good News with someone – and the person either needs time to think about it, or rejects it altogether – you have not failed!  Remember, God didn’t call us to be successful – only faithful.  We share this Good News faithfully, and allow the Holy Spirit to bring conviction.  Lastly, always spend time praying for that person with whom you desire to share this Good News.

ONE QUOTE:

“God is infinite and cannot be fully expressed in mere words.  God cannot be fully and finally defined because to define something is to put an end to it.  And the Infinite cannot be ended.”  Dr. Michael Ward (one of my professors; it was the moment after first reading this quote….that my head exploded.) 🙂

THREE TRUTHS ABOUT THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

Dark Night of the Soul

Absolutely wonderful (brief) blog about depression – and how God can use it in the life of a believer.

3 Truths About the Dark Night of the Soul – Leadership Journal – Feb 2015

ONWARD CHRISTIAN….SOLDIERS??

There are a number of biblical passages that use the “soldier” as a metaphor for Christians (cf. Eph. 6:10-17; 2 Timothy 2:3-4) However, as this blog attests, not many believers are training like soldiers. And that’s serious mistake….

[Excerpt begins] It’s important to note that churches do fantastic work. Christian charities help people across the globe, Christian missionaries risk life and limb to spread the faith abroad, and churches provide comfort and support to millions. But churches are not properly equipping their members to combat the lies being spread about their faith.

In short, churches are not teaching their members enough about Christian apologetics. This leaves church members unable to respond effectively when their beliefs are challenged. As a result, they often come to doubt what they’ve been taught, and they are certainly ill-equipped to help “win over” friends or acquaintances who may be seekers “on the fence.”

Younger Christians are the most vulnerable, particularly when heading off to college. It’s in college that a young Christian is most likely to have his or her beliefs seriously challenged, be it by professors, atheist students, or both. He must be prepared to deal with this challenge. [Excerpt ends]

IS YOUR PASTOR A MONSTER?

monsterpastor

While the title of this blog may be a little over the top, I can promise you this: because churches can hardly conceive of a Pastor being a “monster” it is easy for men to charm their way into a Lead Pastor position. All a Search Team (and church) need do is open their Bible and look at the level of deceit and corruption within the religious leadership. It was the religious leaders who were almost always on the receiving end of Jesus’ most biting words. “Man’s heart is deceitfully wicked”, wrote Jeremiah.

Granted, there will one day be a reckoning for Sociopathic pastors. But, until then, they continue to hurt people and divide churches. As I looked at the list of characteristics in the blog I can assure you they are spot-on. I once worked with a guy who strongly represented almost every characteristic. No. 6, in my opinion, is huge and serves as a lynchpin for the points.

Pascal once said, in essence, “Evil is never so evil as when done in the name of religion.”  Read the entire blog here.

THINGS YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR YOUR MUSIC PASTOR SAY:

• Okay, now worship like you really mean it!
• Don’t worry, these are young rattlesnakes and they’re not very poisonous…
• I brought some spears for the men to use in worship this morning…
• I’ve written some worship lyrics to Purple Haze…
• Everybody remember the animal noises we went over last week?
• This next song is in 7/4 time so it might feel a little awkward at first…
• You’re going to love this folks – worship yodeling!
• I don’t think that it’s fair that the kids in children’s ministry are the only ones who get to do wiggle worship…
• Pull out your hankies or grab some Kleenex – we’re going to give the Lord a wave offering!
• Turn to the person next to you, look deeply into their eyes and sing, “I love you with the love of the Lord!”
• Alright, it’s conga line time!
• Perhaps you’ve noticed that everyone on the worship team is dressed like David Bowie…
• Alright everyone, let’s lift up our cell phones to the Lord!
• Maybe you’re wondering why there are no instruments on stage except for this huge gong…
• Push back the chairs everybody, we’re having a dance workshop!
• In case you need some extra motivation to worship enthusiastically this morning you’ll notice our ushers have been given cattle prods…
• Why should polka bands have all the good music?
• I got a fever – for more cowbell.

  • “There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” Jesus Christ – John 14:2-3

“One road leads home and a thousand roads lead into the wilderness.” – C.S. Lewis

  • “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25)

“Do you think I am trying to weave a spell? Perhaps I am; but remember your fairy tales. Spells are used for *breaking* enchantments as well as for inducing them.” C.S. Lewis; The Weight of Glory; defending his arguments for heaven

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE:

A cowboy, who just moved to Wyoming from Texas, walks into a bar and orders three mugs of Bud. He sits in the back of the room, drinking a sip out of each one in turn.
When he finishes them, he comes back to the bar and orders three more.

The bartender approaches and tells the cowboy, “You know, a mug goes flat after I draw it. It would taste better if you bought one at a time.”

The cowboy replies, “Well, you see, I have two brothers. One is an Airborne Ranger, the other is a Navy Seal, both serving overseas somewhere. When we all left our home in Texas, we promised that we’d drink this way to remember the days when we drank together. So I’m drinking one beer for each of my brothers and one for myself.”

The bartender admits that this is a nice custom, and leaves it there.

The cowboy becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. He orders three mugs and drinks them in turn. One day, he comes in and only orders two mugs. All the regulars take notice and fall silent.

When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says, “I don’t want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss.”

The cowboy looks quite puzzled for a moment, then a light dawns in his eyes and he laughs. “Oh, no, everybody’s fine,” he explains, “It’s just that my wife and I joined the Baptist Church and I had to quit drinking. Hasn’t affected my brothers, though….”
