6 MINUTES TO FLOOD YOUR HEART WITH JOY & ENCOURAGEMENT

Lee Stoneking addresses the UN General Assembly by (wait for it) humbly preaching the gospel. This is the type of news (I suspect happens more often than we would expect) that the major news sites do not cover. But God covers it. 🙂

THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD…

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2)

10 FEARS A PARENT WHO HAS LOST A CHILD FACES

For obvious reasons, this article jumped out at me like a Neon Light. That said, some of the articles I read concerning the loss of a child are strong, others – not so much. However, this one is spot-on. You may not have lost a child but, chances are, you know someone who has. This article offers some keen insight.

WHAT SATAN DOESN’T WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT PORN & LUST

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Either [Christ] was a raving lunatic of an unusually abominable type, or else He was, and is, precisely what He said. There is no middle way.” – C.S. Lewis – The Problem of Pain

“Religion makes us proud of what we have done. The Gospel makes us proud of what Jesus has done.”  Timothy Keller

“All pains and pleasures we have known on earth are early initiations in the movements of the Eternal Dance (heaven); but the Dance itself is strictly incomparable with the sufferings of this present time…[The Dance] does not exist for us, but we for it.” – C.S. Lewis; The Problem of Pain; on heaven (Here’s to “practicing our dance steps” in preparation for the Eternal Dance!)

“The Red Sea may roll before us; the desert my entrap us; the enemy may press on our heels. The past may seem implausible and the future impossible, but God works in ways we cannot see. He will make a way of escape for His weary, but waiting, children.” “I [the LORD] will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43:19) – Robert Morgan; The Dead Sea Rules

“We can rest contentedly in our sins and in our stupidities;…But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” – C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain; on how God uses pain to get our attention.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

Former atheist, Lee Strobel, writes at the end of his investigation in The Case For Christ: “I’ll admit it:I was ambushed by the amount and quality of the evidence that Jesus is the unique Son of God… I shook my head in amazement. I had seen defendants carted off to the death chamber on much less convincing proof! The cumulative facts and data pointed unmistakably towards a conclusion that I wasn’t entirely comfortable in reaching.”

“They say of some temporal suffering, ‘No future bliss can make up for it,’ not knowing that Heaven, once attained, will work backwards and turn even that agony into a glory.” – C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce. Paul wrote, “For I consider that our present sufferings cannot even be compared to the coming glory that will be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18)

“In the name of the strong love [of Christ], all the evils, all the injustices, and all the pains of the present world must now be addressed with the news that healing, justice, and love have won the day! That’s why we pray: ‘Thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.’ Easter Day was the first great answer to that prayer.” – Theologian, N.T. Wright

PROSPECTIVE PASTOR UPDATE

1. As stated, to do our best to protect the identity of the man (since he’s not yet shared this with his church), his name will not be publicized until Sunday, April 19th.  (That’s this coming Sunday.)
2. He (and his family) will come “In View of a Call” (for what “In View of a Call” means, click here) the last weekend of April (24th-26th). Q & A sessions, along with Meet & Greet times will take place Friday & Saturday. He will preach both services on Sunday morning, as well as Sunday evening. Following the evening service, the church will vote. This is not a “done deal.” God will speak through the Body.

A TALE OF TWO SONS

Sunday Evening; April 19th; 5:30pm; BHBC (54th & Slide)

It’s my favorite passage in all of Scripture. We know it as the parable of the Prodigal Son. Jesus, however, begins the story by simply saying, “A man had two sons….” And both were lost.

The pig slop, the son’s apology, the sandals, the ring, etc., – they all are pregnant with meaning applicable for us today. We will unpack this passage verse-by-verse during this single-evening study. Come see God “run.” nw

GOD’S POWER ON DISPLAY

Actually, even the most menacing of thunder storms in no way represent the extent of God’s power – but it does make a person consider just how powerful God must be.  (It’s been said, “When you consider the brightness of the sun, can we possibly comprehend the brightness of its Creator?”) This meteorological titan was on display this past weekend just east of Lubbock.

BIGOTRY, THE BIBLE, AND LESSONS FROM INDIANA (NY Times)

From the article: “Human understanding of what is sinful has changed over time,” said David Gushee, an evangelical Christian who teaches Christian ethics at Mercer University. (Ya think? This is inevitable as mankind blindly molds the Bible’s teaching into our own image.)

Fear not when “Christian” pundits rewrite Scripture. It’s nothing new. Paul warned his readers about it 20 centuries ago.

“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.” Paul; 2 Timothy 4:3-4

WHEN GRIEF BECOMES A DISORDER

“As universal as grief is, the grieving process is a very individual experience… Grief is not one thing. It is a shorthand word for a complex, time-varying experience that is unique for each person and each loss,” states M. Katherine Shear, MD, professor of psychiatry at Columbia University.

The danger is when our grief “takes root” and, over time, leads to one, or more, of the Major Depressive Disorders.

On a personal note, it took me 8 months to emerge from the Shock Stage after losing our son.  And 18 months passed before I finally turned a significant corner.  Truth be told, I was always moving forward, but, depending on the facts surrounding the loss, the period of grief is completely unique to each individual.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

‘There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock it is opened.” – C.S. Lewis; The Great Divorce

“We who feel ourselves alienated from the fellowship of God can now raise our discouraged heads and look up. Through the virtues of Christ’s atoning death the cause of our banishment has been removed. We may return as the Prodigal returned, and be welcomed. As we approach the Garden, our home before the Fall, the flaming sword is withdrawn. The keepers of the tree of life stand aside when they see a son of grace approaching.”  – A.W. Tozer; The Knowledge of the Holy

“Our model [for love] is Jesus – not only [the Jesus] of Calvary, but [also the Jesus of the carpenter’s] workshop, the roads, the crowds, the clamorous demands and surly oppositions, the lack of all peace and privacy, the interruptions. For this…[is God] operating under human conditions.” – C.S. Lewis; The Four Loves

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE:

A man traveling to Florida in advance of his wife writes back to her.  However, the letter mistakenly goes to a very recently widowed woman.  The widow opens the letter and reads the following:  “Have finally arrived, though it is hotter here than I expected. Please pack appropriately, as I am looking forward to your arrival next week.”

A TALE OF TWO SONS

Known as the story of the Prodigal Son, Jesus simply begins the story by saying, “A man had two sons….”  And both sons were lost. (Luke 15:11-32)

On Sunday evening, April 19th, immediately after a brief Business Meeting, we will unpack, verse by verse, this powerful story of mankind’s corruption being redeemed by God’s love for us in Christ.  This is my favorite story in all of Scripture.

Business Meeting begins at 5pm; Bible Learning will commence at 5:30pm.  This is a “single-evening study”.  Join me as we look at the only passage in Scripture where God runs!

A Tale of Two Sons

FOUR VERY GOOD BLOGS ON THE TOPIC OF WORSHIP – Specifically, to those of us who lead.

I often come across blogs like this.  And, on occasion, I read one that bears sharing.  Here, I’m sharing four.

There has been a tendency this past decade, or so, to make the musical portion of worship services almost concert-like.  I am vehemently opposed to this.

Truth be told, nowhere in Scripture are we given a style from which to choose music.  Furthermore, there is no “order of service.”  People like me are given the task of making certain we, as Jesus instructed, worship the Lord in spirit and in truth.”  This takes much time for study in the Scriptures, prayer, listening to God, and downright hard work.

These four blogs (written between 2009 and 2015) are all solid.  Enjoy….  nw

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“The heart of salvation is the Cross of Christ. The reason salvation is so easy to obtain is that it cost God so much. The Cross was the place where God and sinful man merged with a tremendous collision and where the way to life was opened. But all the cost and pain of the collision was absorbed by the heart of God.” – Oswald Chambers; My Utmost for His Highest

“Nothing is more dreaded than the national government meddling with religion.” – John Adams, 1812 Letter to Benjamin Rush

In regards to God shielding Moses’ eyes with His own hand to protect him from dying at the exposure to God’s glory Tim Keller says this, “Moses is protected from God by God. That’s the gospel.”
