AND ALL THIS TIME I THOUGHT THE “DARK AGES” WERE “DARK”. BOY, WAS I WRONG…

I’ve been reading “The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution” by James Hannam, Ph.D. in physics & history, Oxford & Cambridge Universities.

I’ve always been under the impression that the Middle Ages were “Dark”. Hence, the phrase “Dark Ages.” But would you believe that’s a misnomer?

The Middle Ages Were Certainly Not “Dark”. Read on….

Dr. Hannam writes, “If you were taught that the Middle Ages were a time of intellectual stagnation, superstition, and ignorance, you were taught a myth that has been utterly refuted by modern scholarship. Without the scholarship of the Middle Ages, modern science would not exist.

“The Middle Ages were a time of one intellectual triumph after another. The people of medieval Europe invented spectacles, the mechanical clock, the windmill, and the blast furnace by themselves. Lenses and cameras, almost all kinds of machinery, and the industrial revolution itself all owe their origins to the forgotten inventors of the Middle Ages.”

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question.” – Physicist (and atheist) Sir Fred Hoyle

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

Mouthwash for the Imagination

“C.S. Lewis once referred to certain kinds of books as ‘mouthwash for the imagination.’ This is what he attempted to provide in the Narnia stories: an unfamiliar world in which we could rediscover what it might mean to meet the Holy without the staleness of religious preconceptions as they appear in our culture. The point of Narnia is to help us rinse out what is stale in our thinking about Christianity – which is almost everything.” – (Rowan Williams – “The Lion’s World: A Journey Into the Heart of Narnia”)

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

From C.S. Lewis’ ‘Chronicles of Narnia – Prince Caspian’:

“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you’re bigger.”
“That is because you are older, little one,” answered Aslan.
“Not because you are?”
“I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

What Lewis is portraying here is the direct correlation between one’s spiritual growth and one’s view of God.  As author/theologian, Rowan Williams, comments, “The more [Lucy] develops [her faith in Aslan], the more there is to see and know of Aslan.”  Translation: as we grow in our Christian faith, we see Truth more clearly; our view of God deepens as much as it widens.

The worship center was almost filled to capacity this past Sunday evening as three former Mormon Missionaries shared their stories of coming to faith in the Jesus Christ.  Thank you for supporting this event.  NOTE:  we know for certain two Mormon Missionaries were in attendance.  Who knows what God will do with the testimonies of Adam’s Road in the lives of those two missionaries.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Miracles are always examples of God communicating with us in some fashion…But they aren’t just communications. There is a particular intimacy to them, as though God wants more than anything to let us know he is with us.” (Eric Metaxas, “Miracles”)

“Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe – a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.” – Albert Einstein
