CHRISTIANS & HALLOWEEN

This is an excellent, balanced blog by John MacArthur.  A little lengthy, but well worth the read.  You can read his blog here.

YOU WILL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE YOUR FAITH THIS WEEK. SO REMEMBER THIS…

Paul, the writer of most of the New Testament, was not a great speaker. His power came not from speaking/preaching skills, but from the Holy Spirit – the same Holy Spirit that dwells in you.

“When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you [the Gospel]… I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.” (1 Cor. 2:1-5)

THE ARMOR OF GOD

Armor-of-God_SeriesButton2_raster_web

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:10-11)

“When we put on the whole armor of God, we put on the nature of Christ Jesus…When you put on the full armor of God, you say to the devil, ‘You have to go through Jesus to get to me!” Charles Stanley, “When the Enemy Strikes”

THE OLD IS GONE; THE NEW IS HERE

“We may be, in part, products of our past; but if the gospel is true, we do not need to be prisoners of it.” – Andy Bannister

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”  (2 Corinthians 5:17)

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, then walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyles. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” – Brennan Manning

“How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none. God never hurries. There are no deadlines against which He must work. Only to know that is to quiet our spirits and relax our nerves.” – A.W. Tozer

“If a thing’s value is determined by what someone will pay for it, then the cross reveals that each of us is immeasurably valuable to God.” – Abdu Murray

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE:

“A doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn’t pay his bill, so he gave him another six months.” – Henny Youngman

WHAT SATAN DOES NOT WANT US TO KNOW

“Every defeated Christian we have worked with, regardless of their presenting problem, had one thing in common. They either did not know – or had forgotten – who they were in Christ.

“Every believer is alive in Christ and therefore united with Him:

In His death (Romans 6:3)
In His burial (Romans 6:4)
In His resurrection (Romans 6:5, 8, 11)
In His ascension ((Ephesians 2:6)
In His life (Romans 5:10-11)
In His power (Ephesians 1:19-20)
In His inheritance (Romans 8:16-17; Ephesians 1:11-12)

Neil Anderson & Hal Baumchen, “Finding Hope Again”

“Wandering in the Countryside of the Kingdom”

“It is odd – I kind of know how to speak with people from a different kingdom than my own (non-believers); I also know how to talk to people in the Kingdom I belong to (Christians); [however], I don’t know quite what to say to you who are wandering in the countryside of the Kingdom. It seems I should just let you enjoy the scenery. It speaks better than I could. I do want you to decide to stay.”

The above quote is from Dr. Holly Ordway’s book, “Not God’s Type: An Atheist Academic Lays Down Her Arms”. Dr. Ordway’s fencing coach, Josh, had been, for years, discussing Christ with Dr. Ordway, an, at that time, ardent atheist. As Dr. Ordway began “hearing the roar of the Lion of the Tribe of Judah,” she sent Josh an email expressing her fear about trusting Christ. Above is an excerpt from his response – which I thought was absolutely brilliant. NOTE: Dr. Ordway now is head of the Apologetics program at HBU.

ON THE ACCURACY OF THE GOSPELS

“Biographies written about subjects who lived in the recent past, relative to the time of writing (e.g. those by Tacitus and Suetonius), especially those penned in the early Roman Empire, were generally marked by a greater concern for factual accuracy. In such cases, biographers were expected to reject implausibilities and to seek to write what was true. The Gospels, penned within fifty or so years after Jesus’ ministry, fall into this category.”

“That the Gospel writers were determined to produce an accurate account of Jesus’ life is especially clear in the opening of one of them, the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:1-4). This prologue is very much in the mold of Thucydides, Polybius, and Josephus. Luke clearly claims to be writing history conforming to the highest standards of Greco-Roman historiography.”

Colin R. Nicholl; Ph. D., University of Cambridge

“SAME POWER”

I love this new song by Jeremy Camp.  Based on passages in Ephesians and Romans, the message is that the same power that God used to raise Jesus from the dead lives in us.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Jesus Christ has broken the power of Satan;…and henceforth evil spirits, instead of having power over us, tremble and are [terrified] of every true Christian.” – John Henry Newman, 1801-1890

“Christians are not so much in danger when they are persecuted as when they are admired.” – Charles Spurgeon

“Satan doesn’t look like a terrible monster… In fact, he does what he can to disguise himself and make himself invisible so he won’t be blamed or fought as the enemy. Camouflaged in deception, he’ll manipulate circumstances and situations [and people] against you.” – Charles Stanley, “When the Enemy Strikes”

LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE:

“Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.” Henny Youngman

PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Experts are calling the recent rain a “thousand year rain”.  Here you see a Convenience Store with water halfway up the walls of the store.  Below that, a church.  Finally, a photo of one of the dozens of roads that have been washed out.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

When God doesn’t answer prayer, I think of these words, “God was saying, ‘Son, when a child of mine makes a request, I always give that person what he or she would have asked for if they knew everything I know.’ Do you believe that? To the degree that you believe that, you are going to have peace.” – Tim Keller

“We don’t come to faith by reason – but our faith *is* reasonable.” – John Hendrix

“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.” C.S. Lewis
