Come & Behold Him

THROUGH DEATH, HE BROUGHT LIFE

“[Christ] himself partook of the same things [as mankind], that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil…” (Hebrews 2:14)

John MacArthur: This is the ultimate purpose of the incarnation (God becoming man): Jesus came to earth to die. By dying, he was able to conquer death in his resurrection. By conquering death, he rendered Satan powerless against all who are saved.

THE SONGS OF JESUS

From the article:

Jesus of Nazareth is explicitly mentioned in fewer than half of the 66 books in the Protestant Bible, Tim Keller sees Jesus in all of them. “There are two ways to read the Bible,” the New York Times best-selling author and prominent pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Presbyterian says. “The one way to read the Bible is that it’s basically about you. … Or you can read it as all about Jesus.”

SCIENCE LED THIS ATHEIST TO GOD

The Science of God

Dr. Sarah Silviander has her Ph.D. in Astronomy & Astrophysics and teaches presently at the University of Texas in Austin.

Having grown up a devout atheist, it was her pursuit of science that led her to faith in God. It reminds me of atheist, Antony Flew, who – after becoming a theist – confessed, “In the words of Plato’s Socrates, I must go where the evidence leads.”

Dr. Silviander’s testimony is lenghty (just under six printed pages) but it is deeply intellectual and fascinating. Enjoy

WHEN DEFENDING YOUR CHRISTIAN FAITH, BE KIND & RESPECTFUL

“Arguments about religion often get heated, generating much more heat than light. But Christians are called to be a light in a dark place, rather than fiery furnaces in an already over-heated world. The Apostle Peter charges us to defend the faith “with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience” (1 Peter 3:15-16). His apostolic colleague, Paul, writes that love is “patient and kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). Jesus, our Lord, promises, “The meek will inherit the earth” (Matthew 5). The arrogant receive no such promise.” Douglas Groothuis

UFO? YOU BE THE JUDGE…

November 15th, aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted this photo. It was taken while the ISS was over India. In the upper right of the photo you can clearly see a large object with two lights on each end. It also appears to be very large and constructed. Leave your comments.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Christians, too, belong not in the seclusion of a cloistered life but in the midst of enemies.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (I’m reminded of a moment when a student of mine was telling me of her new part-time job. She bemoaned, “I’m the only Christian there!” My one-word reply: “Perfect.”)

OUR DIVINELY CREATED IMAGINATION

Most folks don’t think of our imagination also being created in the image of God. But it is. Like any other human attribute, our imaginations can bring about great good, or great evil.  Consider this powerful quote:

“Miraculously, we have inside us, in the divinely created imagination, if only we will acknowledge and access it, a magic prism or million-faceted diamond that may mediate and multiply the light of the Logos into profound insights and intimations.” Dr. Michael Ward (professor, Oxford University, England, and Houston Baptist University)

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Humans are inherently religious beings, created to be in a relationship with God – and if they reject God, they don’t stop being religious; they simply find some other ultimate principle upon which to base their lives…Faith is a universal human function, and if it is not directed toward God it will be directed toward something else.” Nancy Pearcey, “Total Truth”

“If a thing’s value is determined by what someone will pay for it, then the cross reveals that each of us is immeasurably valuable to God.” Abdu Murray

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” C.S. Lewis

ARE ALL RELIGIONS TRUE?

The picture below shows the answer the above question:  No.  On the left are listed the five major faiths in the world.  Across the top:  “Who/what is that faith’s God?”, “What is required for salvation?”, and “That faith’s view of other religions.”  As you can see, except for Hinduism, every faith system believes in its own exclusivity.  So, the next time someone tells you “All religions are the same,” or “All religions are true,” you can reply, “No, they’re not – not according to those religions.”
