SUMMER REHEARSAL/SINGING SCHEDULE

Adult Choir:  Our final rehearsal for the semester takes place this Wed., 5/31, at 5:30pm. We will continue to sing in the 9:15am worship service through July 2nd, when we will perform the Wilhousky Battle Hymn of the Republic. (You can view a performance of it here.) We will then take a few weeks off until the start of the new school year.

Praise Team –  we rehearse at 6:30pm on Wed’s

Periodically, I will provide pertinent information here.  As has been announced, the south parking area (identified by the fence enclosure) will be off limits for the duration of the project. Very soon the stairwell adjacent to the elevator will be inaccessible.

Bottom Line:  since the construction landscape is changing daily, my best advice to you is to simply keep an eye out for signs either restricting access or directing you in another direction. I’ll do my best to keep you advised.

KNOWING WHY WE BELIEVE WHAT WE BELIEVE: THE EMPTY TOMB

Believers: be encouraged and strengthened in your faith.
Non-believers/skeptics: please consider the historically documented data.

Dr. Mike Licona (the first scholar to speak in the video below) was one of my profs at HBU. I can promise you this: the data has to be strongly in favor of something before he will even begin to consider it “likely” or “probable”. Lee Strobel, as you know, (also speaking in the video) is a former avowed atheist.  The video is less than 8 minutes in length.

Consider this:  When Paul wrote his creed in 1 Cor 15:3-8, many of the “witnesses of the resurrected Jesus” he mentions were still living. People were free (most likely encouraged) to interview these “witnesses” to see if Paul was telling the truth, or not. And yet, not one shred of ancient evidence exists that contradicts Paul’s claim.

THE ARMOR OF GOD

“When we put on the whole armor of God (cf. Eph. 6:10-18), we put on the [very] nature of Christ Jesus…When you put on the full armor of God, you say to the devil, ‘You have to go through Jesus to get to me!” Charles Stanley, When the Enemy Strikes

A HISTORY PROFESSOR’S JOURNEY FROM ATHEISM TO JESUS

Far from being an intellectual slouch, the author attended, both, Kings College in Cambridge and Oxford University.  It’s a compelling story.

From the article: “Christianity, it turned out, looked nothing like the caricature I once held (as an atheist). I found the story of Jacob wrestling with God especially compelling: God wants anything but the unthinking faith I had once assumed characterized Christianity. God wants us to wrestle with Him; to struggle through doubt and faith, sorrow and hope.”

UH… FROG LEGS ANYONE?

I grew up working on my grandparents farm.  They had two stock tanks that, as a kid, I spent a lot of time playing around and skipping rocks on.  I saw a lot of bull frogs.  But NOTHING like this.   Enjoy the KCBD article here (Since the original article was published, the photo of the “monster” bullfrog has, unsurprisingly, gone viral.  You can read the FOX News article here.)

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

“Even duct tape can’t fix stupid. But it can muffle the sound.” Unknown

“Freedom from spiritual conflicts and bondage (lying, sexual sin, gossip, unforgiveness, anger, greed, etc.) is not a power encounter; it’s a truth encounter. Satan is a deceiver, and he will work undercover at all costs. But the truth of God’s Word exposes him and his lies. His demons are like little cockroaches that scurry for the shadows when the Light comes on. Satan’s power is in the lie, and when his lie is exposed by the truth, his plans are foiled.” Neil Anderson; The Bondage Breaker  “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” Jesus Christ (John 8:32)

Choir:  God Shall Wipe Away All Tears

Preacher:  Jason

GOD HELP ME TO BE

We’ve sung this one a couple of times now in “big church.”  As a result, I’ve had a number of people comment on how much they love it.  I’m reading through the Psalms again in my daily devotions.  The lyrics here remind me of the psalms.

BRAVE?  CRAZY?  STUPID? (Or, a combination?) 🙂

Stumbled upon this video footage recently.  I’ve decided that the ones who filmed this are nuts!  Five minutes in length, the footage at the 3:20 mark is terrifying.  Someone once said, when we attempt to stare into the brightness of the sun (and cannot), consider the image of the One who created it.  Likewise, as you watch the brute strength of this tornado, consider that it pales in comparison to the One who spoke the cosmos into existence.  In Job 38:1, the text says, “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind…”  The Hebrew word used for “whirlwind” is the word “ca`ar“, which means literally “tempest, storm.”  Consider with me for a moment the image at the 3:20 mark.  This could well be what Job was looking at when God thundered, “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.” (vs 2)

TO ALL SCHOOL TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS, COUNSELORS, COACHES, ETC – YOU’RE WELCOME.  ENJOY….

It’s not the science, but what atheistic scientists deduce from their science that can be dangerously misleading.  Read the blog here.

THROUGH THE FIRE

Another powerful song.  Performed by the Crabb Family.  Backed up by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

“But now thus says the Lord,… ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” (Isaiah 43:1-3)

INTERVIEWS WITH CHRISTIAN RADIO STATION IN SEATTLE, WA

Last Tuesday afternoon (5/9), I was interviewed by a Christian radio station in Seattle, WA, about the controversial Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.  Because the topic was so intensive they chose to make it a 2-part interview that would air on two consecutive days (this past Thur and Fri.)  The Thursday interview was primarily about 13 Reasons Why.  The Friday interview was primarily about Jordan, and Major Depressive Disorder (clinical depression) and the stigma associated with clinical depression in the church. Each interview is a about 25 minutes. You can access those interviews here (Thur), and here (Fri).   I speak at Slaton High School this Tuesday (5/16).  Prayers are needed and appreciated.

THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD (Ps 19:1)

About the 19th Psalm, C.S. Lewis wrote, “I take this to be the greatest poem in the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”  This past week, USA Today published an article titled, 27 Years of Photos from the Hubble Space Telescope.  Enjoy.  (Pictured above is the Crab Nebula)

KNOW WHY YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE (Christian Apologetics)

When a Skeptic confronts you with, “The only ancient literature that records anything about Jesus is the Bible,” how might you respond?

How about with this? (Click here.)

Additionally, here is an outstanding, intelligent, well-documented editorial for the existence of God posted by Yahoo! News.  The editorial, written for Newsweek, is written by University of Maryland professor, Robert Nelson.

DENZEL WASHINGTON TO GRADS: “PUT GOD FIRST”

I’ve always liked the Academy Award winning actor, Denzel Washington.  Remember the Titans is my second all-time favorite movie (Hoosiers is No. 1).  Washington was the key note speaker at a recent college graduation.  You will enjoy his comments here.

QUOTE(s) of the WEEK

GRACE NOTES:  Suicide and the Bible, Parts 1 & 2

Hope…. comes from God’s Word.  About a week after I posted my blog about 13 Reasons Why, I followed up by posting a blog I wrote shortly after my son, Jordan, took his life titled, Suicide and the Bible.  I wrote that blog in response to a number of teens (and adults) who were under the impression that, if you take your own life, you cannot enter heaven. (Several had loved ones who had taken their lives and they were terrified their loved ones were in hell.)  Last week, that blog was viewed over 32,000 times.  One reader messaged me and asked me a very good – and common – question about suicide I hadn’t addressed in my original blog.  So, I wrote Suicide and the Bible – Part 2.  Hopefully, this brings biblical truth to a painfully misunderstood topic of discussion.

SUMMER REHEARSAL SCHEDULE

Praise Team – Since Adult Bible Study will no longer be meeting in the sanctuary we will begin rehearsing at 6:30pm on Wed., May 10th.

PRESIDENT TRUMP’S RELIGIOUS LIBERTY EXECUTIVE ORDER (signed Thur, May 4th)

CNN:  “We will not allow people of faith to be targeted, bullied or silenced anymore,” Trump proclaimed. “And we will never, ever stand for religious discrimination. Never, ever.”

I purposely omit politics from this blog.  However, this topic relates directly to Christians/Christianity so I’ve chosen to include it here.  I closely watch laws enacted – and ignored – regarding U.S. Religious Liberty/Freedom.  As with most anything coming out of Washington, the EO (executive order) is difficult to interpret accurately.  But I have found a few articles that shed various perspectives on the EO.

Like you, I could offer plenty of commentary here.  But I won’t.  All I will say is that I’m cautiously encouraged.  (FYI – I am happy to share my opinion anytime – just shoot me an email, or call me for coffee.)  What I try to do with almost everything I post is to promote & encourage critical thinking on the part of the reader.  In other words, I share information here, and then encourage the reader to come to their own conclusions as the reader weighs the facts against scripture (our sole authority for truth.)

As expected, far-left news sites are freaking out.  Further, it should be noted that many solid conservatives are disappointed, citing that the president didn’t go far enough.  From what I’ve read though, this EO appears to be a first of several steps.  We’ll see.  You can read more from CNN here, or FOX News here,

CHRIST:  “I’M ON MY WAY”

This past Friday, I was finishing up studying through the New Testament again. I love the final sub-heading inserted by the publisher which says simply, “Jesus Is Coming.”

Rev 22:7 – “Behold, I am coming soon…”

22:12 – “Behold, I am coming soon…”

22:20 – “Surely, I am coming soon…”

Amen! Maranatha – come, Lord Jesus

SUICIDE INTERVENTION TALKS/INTERVIEWS:

I am being interviewed this afternoon (5/9) by a Christian Talk Show in Seattle, WA.  Tomorrow evening (5/10), I will be speaking at Regency Park Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, OK.  Prayers are needed and appreciated.  I will provide updates soon.

MERCY ME:  “EVEN IF”

Twice this past week, I was alerted to this song by the group, Mercy Me.  As I watched the video the first thing that came to mind was the following passage from Daniel 3:

“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”” (Daniel 3:16-18, emphasis mine)

13 REASONS WHY

(As promised, here is a status update regarding my recent blog on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.)  This past week has been nuts.  In a little over one week’s time, the blog I wrote about a popular TV series about teen suicide (the blog is linked here) has been viewed over 195,000 times in 154 countries.  In addition, I have been interviewed on camera by two local news stations, KLBK (which you can view here) & Fox 34 (which you can view here.)  The Fox story is a little more detailed and communicates my concern more clearly.

My week has been filled to the brim with conversations with people from all over the nation – as well as very close to home – regarding their own painful journeys.  One conversation, that supported the sole reason I wrote the blog, was with a man from Indiana who shared that his friend’s 15 year old son had recently taken his life after watching the 13 Reasons Why, writing notes to those who had bullied him before taking his life.  This is virtually the same thing the show’s protagonist, Hannah Baker, does before ending her life.

On a related note: I spoke this week to students at Whiteface ISD on the topic of Suicide & Suicide Intervention.  There was a tremendous response.  Keep praying for those who are hurting. Through Christ, we’re making a difference!

O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY?

I simply must share this with you:  Toward the end of this past Friday’s interview with KLBK, the reporter asked to see several things on my blog, one of which is a page dedicated to my son Jordan (you can access it here.)

Linked to that page is the video we showed at his memorial service, Hands Free.  The reporter asked to watch some of it.

As the reporter and I were watching the video, Jordan, recounting God calling him to missions, says, “I knew God was calling me to be a global missionary…”  It was at that moment the Holy Spirit immediately drew my mind to what I posted the preceding day about my blog: “It’s been viewed in 154 countries…”.

And that’s when I just lost it.

“What man intended for evil, God intended for good,” Joseph told his brothers in Genesis.

Jordan, precious son, God has kept his promise – even in death – and made you a global missionary to the hurting and hopeless. You are saving lives, my love. For Narnia!

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

Saw this video this past week.  Last month, Disney had a fun idea:  “Let’s replace the animatronic version of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride with the real Johnny Depp!”  The reaction of the shocked people is priceless.  Enjoy.

LIFE IN 6 WORDS

I love this 5 minute video clip.  We showed it in church years ago.  It’s about time to show it again.  Enjoy.
